WWII Hickam Field Shirt, Women’s Reproduction

Hickam Field was established in 1935, as Hawaii’s main army airfield and bomber base.  It is next to Pearl Harbor U.S. Naval Base.  On December 7, 1941, 51 airplanes were on the ground at Hickam and a flight of 12 B-17s were expected to arrive that morning.  During the Japanese attack, Hickam Field was the first base hit and hit the hardest with nearly half the airplanes destroyed and the barracks were strafed, resulting in 139 dead and 303 wound.  During the war, Hickam was home to squadrons of patrol planes, a “way station” for heavy bombers being sent to the war zone, trained pilots and aircraft assembly workers.  Hickam was the hub of the Pacific aerial network, supporting aircraft ferrying troops and supplies and the evacuation of the wounded from forward areas.  In 1947, Hickam Field became Hickam Air Force Base.
